Hotel Broletto

Location and service are both outstanding at this comfortable 3-star hotel in the heart of one of Italy’s most underrated Renaissance cities. Nominated Italy’s Capital of Culture for 2016, the UNESCO-listed city of Mantua was for 400 years the home of the Gonzaga family, the Mantuan equivalent of the Florentine Medici family.

Many of the rooms have views on to the surrounding narrow streets of the historic centre.

Bedrooms are simply furnished, elegant but unfussy, with modern bathrooms. Families have the option of booking a suite with a sofa bed for a third person.

A good buffet breakfast – rolls, coffee, cake, cheese, cold meats – is served in the breakfast room. The hotel does not have a restaurant but there is an excellent choice of restaurants, pizzerias and bars locally.

Parking: There is limited parking close to the hotel with the option of free public parking nearby. The hotel is in a restricted traffic zone but permits (€2.60 per day) can be organised by the hotel.

Location

The Hotel Broletto is situated between the Piazza delle Erbe and the splendid palazzo-lined Piazza Sordello. It is less than 500m from the Palazzo Ducale and within a five-minute stroll of most of the city’s main sights.

The perfect illustration of less is more, Mantua is often compared to a small-scale Florence, with a charming historic centre interwoven by cobbled piazzas and porticoed arcades, and an astonishing richness of art and architecture thanks to the Gonzaga family. The astonishing 500-room Palazzo Ducale was the seat of the Gonzaga family from the mid-14th century and although not all rooms are open to the public, there are still extraordinary frescoes by Andrea Mantegna, a roof-level rose garden and 16th century Flemish tapestries.

Other highlights include the Duomo, the Teatro Bibiena and a little further away, the sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
The Palazzo Te, the Gonzaga family’s summer residence, is another of the Gonzaga triumphs, featuring spectacular frescoes painted by Giulio Romano for Federico Gonzaga’s mistress, leisurely lakeside strolls and wonderful colonnaded gardens.

The hotel is close to a good selection of restaurants and bars and well-placed for a ritual evening passeggiata.

The city is surrounded by three lakes, sourced by the River Mincio and surrounded by a 14km cycle path, with, beyond that, largely flat countryside. Verona and the towns that border the southern shores of Lake Garda are approximately 40km away.

A short-break in Mantua works well with a stay in the equally beautiful and relatively tourist-free cities of Padua and Vicenza.
