Locanda San Fantino, San Giovanni a Piro
Set in a part of Italy that is relatively untouched by tourism, the seven-room Locanda San Fantino is part of a sustainable, self-sufficient farm estate. The dramatic mountains, vineyards, olive groves and dense forests of the Cilento National Park are on the doorstep and a coastline fringed by white sandy Blue Flag beaches interspersed with tiny bays and hidden coves accessible only by boat are less than a 15-minute drive away.
Established by owner Sebastiano Petrilli after a career in banking, the Locanda is committed to reviving and promoting local artisans, growing and cultivating much of its own food and providing a cocoon-like atmosphere for its lucky guests.
Outside, the B&B has a small pool and a scattering of comfy chairs and hammocks for lazy hours spent reading or dozing. Beyond that, there are wheat fields, woods and meadows for countryside ambles.
Venetian linen and solid walls ensure a good night’s sleep in the seven large en suite bedrooms. Bathrooms on the ground and first floor have a shower while the two bedrooms on the second floor each have a bathroom with bath. These two rooms can be combined into a suite for five.
Breakfasts of home-made jams, cheese and home-baked bread is served in the farmhouse-style marble-floored dining-room alongside a huge fireplace and piano. Picnic lunches can be organised and lunch and dinner at the Locanda is available if pre-booked, with produce from the vegetable garden, wild edible plants and mushrooms, home reared and produced meat and cheese, and locally-caught seafood. The Locanda also makes its own wine, herbal teas and liqueurs.
San Fantino offers a range of activities and courses, including yoga, cooking, diving and foraging for wild herbs and plants.
The B&B is within walking distance of the medieval village of San Giovanni a Piro. The nearby harbour of Scario has a lovely lungomare and the B&B has a boat moored here available for guests’ use.
Several beaches are easily accessible by car, some with facilities for children and with a bar or restaurant in high season. The 5km long Palinuro beach, the Cilento’s most widely-known beach, is a 30-minute drive away. Other stretches of the rocky coastline are dotted with caves and bays which are deserted outside of the months of July and August.
A stunning stretch of the river Bussento, with sparkling turquoise water, beaches and overhanging trees, is a 20-minute drive away.
Inland, there is a large choice of mountain paths and tracks within a short drive of the Locanda, several of which reward walkers with stunning views.
Other highlights include the Certosa di Padula monastery and the Greek ruins at Paestum and Velia.
