Masseria della Volpe, Noto
A newcomer to Sicily’s hotel scene, this refined former masseria opened in 2015. Surrounded by a large estate dotted with citrus, fruit, carob and olive trees, it is superbly placed for exploring the region, with views across the Noto valley and hovering between a string of beaches and the magnificent baroque towns of Sicily’s south east.
Restful, refined and with a strong focus on eco-sustainability, the hotel’s re-design comprised locally sourced materials including lava stone from Mount Etna and the white stone that is typical of the area. Despite its elegant appearance, the hotel is visibly rooted in its farming environment, with age-old olive and carob trees providing shade around the pool, olive oil produced on the estate and fruit and vegetables used in the restaurant.
Bedrooms and suites
Situated on the ground and first floors of new buildings, bedrooms and suites are decorated in neutral shades, some with exposed stone walls and white beams. Choose from a Classic or Superior room, with a view over the courtyard, a private garden or with a balcony.
Suites have one or two bedrooms/bathrooms and the largest Suite has a roof terrace and separate external space. The apartment offers spacious family accommodation in three bedrooms, with two bathrooms, a kitchen, living-room and private garden.
Immediately in front of the masseria, the attractive pool area has a shallow section for small children, a poolside bar and canopied double sun beds.
Wrap up a day of sightseeing or on the beach in the luxurious spa (limited to 10 guests at a time) which has a lava stone hammam, hot tub and ice-cold waterfall fountain or book in for a beauty treatment or massage. There is also a gym, or if you need a view for inspiration, head for the running track which skirts the circumference of the estate.
Other facilities include a tennis court (artificial grass), boules pitch, volley ball and mountain bikes for exploring the area. The children’s play area has swings, a climbing frame and for toddlers, a small slide and play house.
Restaurants and bars
Start your day with fruit juices squeezed from the fruits in the orchard, locally-sourced ricotta, cheese and ham, pastries and home-made jam.
Meals are served in the hotel’s Ristorante Coda Rossa or, in spring and summer, on the terrace overlooking the pool against the backdrop of the Noto valley. Dinner is a Sicilian treat – with antipasti of tartare di tonno, ricotta-stuffed ravioli, grilled fish and pistachio-based desserts featuring on the menu.
If you enjoy eating out, there are several good places to eat locally, including restaurants in Noto, Modica and in the pretty fishing port of Marzamemi.
ExpertoItaly advice: Don’t hang around – once the word gets out, these rooms are going to go fast!
If you can drag yourself away from the laidback atmosphere at the masseria, there are towns, cities, beaches and nature reserves to explore.
Start in Noto where the main Corso Vittorio Emanuele is an extraordinary testament to baroque architecture. The neighbouring UNESCO towns of Modica, Ragusa and Scicli are all close by. On the coast, Syracuse and the Necropolis of Pantalica are also listed by UNESCO. The hotel is also within easy reach of the principal film locations used in the popular Montalbano television series.
There is a good choice of beaches within a half-hour drive of the hotel, many with fully-equipped ‘lidi’ if you prefer the comfort of a sun bed and shade. The fringes of the Vendicari Nature Reserve are bordered by sandy bays with translucent water, including the popular Calamosche beach and at the very tip of the south east cost, the beach at Portopalo.
