Palazzo Victoria, Verona

Roman villa, medieval mansion and 21st century funky boutique hotel all blend together apparently effortlessly behind a classic façade in the heart of Verona. Roman ruins glint through glass walkways, original frescoes adorn the walls and a Veronese style inner courtyard and garden provides the final secret surprise.

There are 74 rooms (including 15 suites), the best with wraparound balconies and views over the inner courtyard garden and the Corso Porta Borsari. Think Veneto-style indulgence, with hand painted frescoes, parquet and marble floors and classical paintings. Bathrooms are marble-clad even in the most modest De Luxe rooms.

The Borsari 36 Restaurant, under the Michelin-starred chef Carmine Caló and his team, focuses on contemporary Italian cuisine prepared in a theatrical show kitchen in the centre of the room. During the summer months, dine out in the 14th century courtyard amidst olive trees, fresh flowers and the scent of rosemary. Breakfast is a not-to-be-missed buffet while brunch on Sunday mornings is a full-blown affair, and a favourite with the locals. Kick off the evening with a cocktail or aperitivo at The Victoria Club Bar.

Perfectly-placed in the heart of the action and ideal for anyone planning to visit the city’s Roman Arena and other main cultural sights. Step out into the quiet side street on which the hotel is situated and then straight on to the Corso di Porta Borsari, ideal for some serious retail therapy or for a cappuccino and spot of people watching.

Stroll to the Piazza delle Erbe, Juliet’s house and the Torre dei Lamberti or to the Via Mazzini for more retail opportunities.
