Villa Massimo, Salina

A charming Aeolian villa, with whitewashed walls and several large outdoor terraces that are tailor made for sea and star-gazing. Set amidst a landscape of classic Mediterranean vegetation of olive trees and caper bushes, with Monte dei Porri behind it, the villa has dramatic sea views that take in the silhouetted neighbouring islands of Alicudi and Filicudi.

This is essentially a villa for outdoor living: the terraces have plenty of seating, a barbecue and wood burning oven.

Recently restored, the villa is made up of one main unit with an adjacent dependence. Interiors are simple and rustic, with exposed beams, wooden furniture, Sicilian tiling and wrought iron, but with all mod cons. The main house has a double bedroom and bathroom and a living room with open-plan kitchen. There is another double bedroom, bathroom and living room in the dependence. Both living rooms have a single sofa bed.

The pretty sandy bay of Pollara, famous for its starring role in the opening scene of the 1994 film, Il Postino, is accessed via a short path.

Villa Massimo is on the west coast of Salina, in the stunning bay of Pollara. There are a few other houses nearby but it is essentially a very quiet and peaceful location.

Salina is made up of three key areas: Santa Marina on the east coast, Leni, and Malfa on the north coast. The island's main activities are the cultivation of grapes, olives and capers and the sweet Malvasia wine .

A regular bus service connects all the villages on the island and a main road connects Lingua, Santa Marina, Malfa and Pollara and a smaller road runs between the two volcanoes to Leni and Rinella.

Keen walkers can hike through the volcanic landscape to the Fossa delle Felci nature reserve which offers breathtaking views from a height of 982m across the peninsula to Mount Etna on Sicily’s north coast.
