Day trips from Rome

Rome is rich in history, museums and picturesque corners to explore, and always offers opportunities for fun and entertainment that make it difficult to tear yourself away from the city. But venture out and the outskirts of Rome are full of treasures waiting to amaze you with easy trips by bus or train.

Picturesque villages, parks and enchanted gardens, medieval castles and Renaissance palaces to visit. But also lakes for picnics and beaches where you can eat fresh fish while being kissed by the sun.

You can detach from the chaos of the city in little more than half an hour to the Castelli Romani, to enjoy a Spaghetti Alla Carbonara dish in a typical trattoria, or in Ostia or Bracciano.  Or go as far as the Tuscia for a day in the footsteps of the Etruscans or to visit magnificent Italian gardens.  But there is so much to explore also in Rieti and Frosinone, which reserve jewels of art and nature, and in the province of Latina, famous for its golden sandy beaches that hide archaeological surprises."Villa Torlonia" in Frascati hills of the "Castelli Romani"

Trips to the villages near Rome
There is only an embarrassment of choices among the dozens of small villages perched on the rock, starting with the now very famous Civita di Bagnoregio, or the lesser-known Subiaco, with its Monastery of San Benedetto carved in stone. Nearby Sperlonga, with its picturesque alleys, and Calcata, the artists' village. Or Borgo Antuni, an abandoned town in the province of Rieti.

Trips to parks and gardens

Garden lovers should head to the Garden of Ninfa, which the New York Times called one of the most romantic in the world, or to the Renaissance-style garden of Villa Ruspoli in Vignanello.
Do you prefer a wilder nature, for a picnic in freedom? The right place is the Monte Gelato waterfalls, in a protected area of the Valle del Treja, while the ideal destination for a trip outside the town with the children is the Sacred Wood of Bomarzo, with its stone monsters.

Trips between the castles, villas and noble palaces

In the surroundings of Rome, history shows off the splendours of all its ages, from medieval ruins to nineteenth-century noble residences. And in the Castle of Santa Severa, dating back to the 11th century, you can relive it in 3D, thanks to the immersive technology of augmented reality. The Orsini-Odescalchi Castle on Lake Bracciano is a fabulous location, which often serves as a backdrop for VIP weddings, while at Villa Farnese in Caprarola the frescoes will enchant you. Villa d’Este in Tivoli needs no introduction.

Trips to the lakes and to the sea

Everybody knows the lakes of Bolsena and Bracciano. Less famous, but all to discover, the mysterious Lake Canterno, and Lake Turano, in the Rietino area.  And for a trip to the sea? Obviously Ostia, where you can also visit the archaeological park, Sabaudia and the beaches of the Circeo promontory.
