Art, culinary delights and cycling in the Veneto region

Start with a week along the banks of the Mincio River

This two-centre holiday starts in the most relaxing place we know, in an idyllic setting on the banks of the river Mincio.

La Finestra sul Fiume is a five-bedroom B&B, a short walk from the villages of Borghetto and Valeggio and within easy driving distance of Lake Garda, Verona and Mantua.

Shift gently into holiday mode with swims in the river and cycle rides along its banks to Peschiera del Garda and Mantua discoring castles and beautiful hamlets.

Borghetto and Valeggio’s location between the regions of Lombardy and the Veneto means that both towns have an excellent gastronomic heritage but their main claim to culinary fame is the tortellini that are on the menus of every local restaurant.

Only a 15-minute stroll from the accommodation, one can spend a relaxing afternoon in the Parco Giardino Sigurtà, one of the most admired gardens the world thanks to its extension, 600,000 square meters, and to the numerous points of historical and natural interest.

Enchanting and colorful blooms will accompany you throughout the seasons: in March and April, the Tulipanomania will leave you breathless with over a million tulips in bloom with the most varied shapes and shades; in May, an avenue of 30,000 roses will lead you for a one kilometer long floral walk, while hundreds of tropical water lilies will dance in the summer in the 18 pools of water, creating fantastic colors. Panoramic boulevards, lawns and enchanting views characterize this corner of greenery, awarded as the Most Beautiful Park in Italy in 2013 and as the Second Most Beautiful Park in Europe in 2015.

4 days in delightful Padua

Parks, gardens, arcaded streets and Renaissance squares all vie for attention in the city. Everyday life centres around the medieval market squares of Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, both at their most beautiful in early morning and just two of the numerous piazzas that characterise the historic centre of Padua. A visit to the neighbouring medieval Palazzo della Ragione is a must, both for the food stalls on the ground floor and the magnificent frescoed great hall on the upper floor.

The city’s university is the second-oldest in Italy and home to the world’s oldest anatomy theatre. It was here that Galileo taught maths and physics. Pause for a caffeine fix in the Café Pedrocchi then take a stroll through the university’s botanical garden which has been in continuous use since its creation in 1545. The UNESCO world heritage gardens have several rare plant collections and an ongoing programme of scientific research.

Padua’s star attraction and one of the few places in the city where you are likely to feel the presence of other tourists, is the extraordinary Scrovegni Chapel where Giotto’s frescoes depict scenes from the New Testament.

The city is equipped with cycle paths that make it very suitable for exploring on two wheels, it's even possible to cycle all the way to Venice along the Brenta river.
