Bernina Express and Lake Como

Travel on the narrow-gauge Bernina Express through the Swiss Alps to Tirano then transfer to the shores of Lake Como for more spectacular scenery.

Day 1: Travel to Zurich; overnight in St Moritz

Fly or travel by train to Zurich. From here, the super-efficient Swiss rail network will whisk you to Chur, and then on to Punt Muragl, the ultimate way of exploring the Alpine scenery of the Zurichsee and Walensee lakes with just one easy change in Samedan.

Transfer by funicular from Punt Muragl station to the Romantik Hotel Muottas, St Moritz, situated at the top of the ride.

We recommend spending two nights at the Romantik Hotel Muottas, to allow time to visit glamorous St Moritz. Situated at almost 2500m, surrounded by the extraordinary Engadine mountain range, accommodation is in Nordic-style traditional rooms. There are two restaurants: the less formal Scatla restaurant or the option of candlelit dinners in the Panorama restaurant. At breakfast, homemade muesli, pastries and coffee is served on the panoramic terrace.

Day 3: Bernina Express to Tirano; transfer to Lake Como

The four hour Bernina Express train ride to Tirano travels through the Bernina Pass, offering glimpses of the Morteratsch Glacier and aerial views at Ospizio Bernina, over 200m above sea level. The journey continues past fir-tree covered mountains, pretty villages and the legendary Brusio Spiral Viaduct.

From Tirano, it is a short walk to the Trenitalia station where you can board a train to Varenna on Lake Como and Milan. The train journey to Varenna takes approximately 1.5 hours.

From Varenna is quick hop on the private boat to the Hotel Filario, a lakeside hotel with glorious views. The best rooms have a large terrace overlooking the lake. With a pretty waterfront and tiny stone beach, Hotel Filario in Lezzeno is extremely well-located for visiting other lake towns.

FAQ

  • What is the difference between the Bernina Express and regional trains?
The Bernina Express has air-conditioned panoramic cars with large windows extending right into the roof cove. Information on the route is also provided via loudspeaker.

The regional trains are made up of standard coaches with ordinary windows.
  • What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class?
In 1st class you benefit from generous space and plenty of leg room. 1st class offers generous, comfortable single and double seats. Thanks to the lower number of passengers per coach, your journey is quieter and more relaxed.

2nd class offers comfortable double seats with sufficient leg room.
  • Is it possible to dine on board the Bernina Express?
The Bernina Express does not have a dining car. However, regional snacks and warm and cold drinks are available from the mini-bar service. The Bernina Express reaches Poschiavo / Tirano or St. Moritz around lunchtime. There are many restaurants available in both towns.
