Baroque beauty in Sicily

A brief snapshot of the best of Sicily's baroque treasures in Siracusa and Modica

First stop, Siracusa

Just under an hour’s drive from Catania airport, embark on a voyage of discovery of over 3000 years of history, all packed into the tiny island of Ortigia, Siracusa.

Although generally more associated with the Greeks and Romans, the historical centre of Siracusa also has several interesting baroque buildings, including Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco which encircles an enclosed courtyard and has interiors as extravagant as the building’s exterior.

Stay at the atmospheric Giuggiulena B&B which has a large roof-top sun terrace with a view and a basement that leads straight out to the rocks and sea – with a couple of snorkels thrown in. Bedrooms overhang the sea below, with direct views of the island of Ortigia.

Next, Modica

A short drive will take you to Modica in the island’s south-east corner.  The town was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake and showcases some of the best examples of Italian baroque architecture.

The centrepiece is undoubtedly the beautiful Church of San Giorgio but other elaborately designed churches and palazzos all contribute to what is, without a doubt, an exceptionally beautiful town.  The nearby beaches at Marina di Modica and Sampieri are perfect for a relaxing afternoon in the sun.

Stay at the centrally-located Hotel Palazzo Failla, a former Sicilian aristocratic residence, still with antique furnishings, frescoed ceilings and original flooring but combined with modern amenities to provide an unparalleled level of comfort, privacy and intimacy.

Mr and Mrs Failla, whose presence provides a real sense of care, supervise the daily operations and the staff is unfailingly attentive, competent and friendly.

Women at War at the Siracusa's Greek Festival - 09/05-06/07

2019’s theme is “Women and War” so visitors will be treated to renditions of Trojan Women, Helen (both by Euripides), and finally the hilarious Lysistrata, Aristophanes’ comedy telling of how the women of Athens protested against the Peloponnesian War with an ardent sex strike.
