Alternatively, Sirmione offers many fine restaurants; reservations are essential. For something to remember, La Rucola 2.0 does sea bass, prawns and the catch of the day to feature in risottos, pastas and grilled guises, combined with flavour-enhancing confits, pâtés and marinades.

Lake Garda is the largest of the Italian lakes, bordered by vineyards and olive groves and framed by snow-capped mountains. Surrounded by Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige and the Veneto, Sirmione is perfectly placed for a two or three-centre tailor made break. In keeping with the southern end of the lake, it enjoys a Mediterranean microclimate so can get quite hot in the summer and is probably at its best in the Spring.

Close to the airports at Verona and Brescia, Sirmione is also easily accessible from the train stations at Peschiera and Desenzano. Ferries depart from a jetty in the town centre to other resorts on the lake.

Sitting on a peninsula that stretches into the lake, the heart of the town is a maze of tiny winding pedestrianised streets. Take the ‘trenino’ up the hill to the Grotte da Catullo - not actually a ‘grotto’ but the Catullus family villa – and visit the Rocca Scaligera, a 13th century fairytale-style castle defended by a moat and patrolled by swans and ducks.
