La Finestra sul Fiume

This former mill hovers on the edge of the banks of the river Mincio, one of Italy’s cleanest rivers, lovingly converted into a five-bedroom B&B by owners Pietro and Mattea. Perfect for a few days of complete relaxation, it is a good base for visiting Verona, Mantua and the southern part of Lake Garda, or for anyone looking to explore the area’s superb gastronomic tradition.

In the grounds of the B&B, willow trees slung with hammocks border the gently meandering river and bridges create tiny grassy islands filled with flittering butterflies and the gentle drone of crickets and frogs. In the summer months, you can swim in part of the river. Breakfasts are bespoke (after a discussion with Petro on the previous evening) and memorable, eaten at your own individual table on the riverbank as you watch drifting swans and geese.

The B&B is in an ivy-clad building in the heart of this rural idyll. Bedrooms are simple, white-washed, with beamed ceilings and personal touches and with modern bathrooms. An extra bed or cot can be added for children.

There is no restaurant but the villages of Borghetto and Valeggio are within walking distance and both have excellent restaurants, all featuring the local traditional tortellini, trout and pike with polenta.
