For anyone looking to combine a rural stay with beach life and a spot of sightseeing, the Locanda’s location is pretty much unbeatable. The gorgeous Versilian beaches and the coastal resorts of Forte di Marmi and Viareggio are a ten-minute drive away and on summer evenings in the old town of Pietrasanta, art installations, bars and restaurants jostle for space in the huge main piazza.

The art treasures of Lucca and Florence are easily accessible or head into the Garfagnana for some superb hiking with a professional walking guide organised by the Locanda.

For music fans, there is opera at the Torre del Lago Puccini festival for around four weeks from mid-July.

Also nearby are the wonderful 17th century villas and gardens - the Villa Reale, Villa Mansi and Villa Torrigiani - in the hills around Lucca.
