Locanda San Francesco

The desire to offer simply the best hospitality, together with a real passion for Montepulciano and its surrounding area, are the driving forces behind La Locanda di San Francesco.

The Locanda is run very much along the lines of a private home: guests are given their own front door key and invited to make use of the well-stocked library and DVD collection.

The Gothic brick arch in the Suite’s stunning bathroom, originally a portal of the San Francesco church, has been adapted to accommodate a double washbasin.

There is no restaurant but breakfast is provided in the large reception room.

Rooms

Accommodation is in one of four beautifully-styled bedrooms, where antique furnishings sit side-by-side with all mod cons and the views are of the Piazza San Francesco or the glorious Val d’Orcia.

All bedrooms have a king or queen size bed and parquet flooring and the bathrooms feature large rainfall showers, bathrobes and Aveda toiletries. Of the four rooms, the Suite is the most interesting historically, sharing a wall with the next door Church of San Francesco and featuring a small spiral staircase that leads to a ‘secret’ room, discovered during the restoration of the property, and now a separate sitting-room.

Hotel Restaurant

The ground floor of the palazzo is a very stylish wine bar and bistro, housed in a spectacular stone-walled room with 14th century arches, and the frequent setting for art exhibitions and live jazz. Enjoy a light snack or simple meal, such as locally-produced cheese and salami platters, accompanied by a glass of Italian or French wine.

Location

La Locanda is situated in the very core of Montepulciano, within easy walking distance of many of the cultural riches of the old town in addition to the best restaurants and shops. Make time also for the Basilica of San Biagio, generally regarded as the town’s tour de force and built just outside the historic centre in white travertine that is set off perfectly by the muted backdrop of vineyards and oak forests.

This is the heart of the area that produces the world famous Brunello of Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano wines. La Locanda’s owners, Cinzia and Luca, will happily organize a visit to a leading wine producer or a private tour, with guided wine tastings, to the family’s winery, Tenuta Valdipiatta, generally considered one of the most prestigious producers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

Just a short drive from the main ‘Autostrada del Sole’, Montepulciano is a great base for exploring much of Tuscany and neighbouring Umbria. Siena, Cortona, Perugia and Arezzo are all within an hour’s drive while Volterra, San Gimignano and Florence are a little further.

Getting there: Perugia airport (80km); Pisa and Rome (200 km).
