Family twin centre holiday: Pozzuoli and Ischia

Just a few miles north of Naples, Pozzuoli is an especially great destination inviting visitors to a loaded menu of archaeological discoveries.

Your kids might not relish history lessons at school but snorkeling around a sunken Roman city is something else.  Go to the submerged archeological park of Baia for some diving and snorkeling fun through Roman statues and mosaics..

The nearby underground archaeological path of Rione Terra is an altogether an ancient and modern experience - with virtual reality exploration of te ancient Roman life - while budding geologists will love the bubbling mud of La Solfatara, a shallow volcanic crater part of a giant volcano.

Take a break from all the learning with a picnic by Lake Avernus, a volcanic crater-lake once thought to be the entrance to Hades. It's here the Odysseus meets Elpenor his comrade who went missing after his death on Circe's island.

The best way to get to grips with this ancient town is on a walking tour - there are lots of themes to choose from, whether your crew is into food, archeology or geology.

Move over to Ischia where the ancient history, volcanic activities and astonishing marine life are enough to inspire any flagging historian, geologist or biologist student.

The largest island of the Bay of Naples has a winning mix of beachy beauty, volcanic activities and ancient history that makes it perfect for a family seaside holiday with brains.

Visit the Aragonese Castle, displaying different layers of history all the way back when the Greeks made it their colony.  Spend some time on the beach of San Montano, relax at the Negombo Thermal Gardens and get active again with a geological walk among the island's hot springs and fumaroles.

Here, you have seven full days, so take it easy and make the most of the tranquil seaside atmosphere.

Down in Depth Experience - Baia the city underwater

The Bay of Naples is a unique melting pot of history, archaeology, mythology, geology and volcanic life, perfectly emblematised by the Baia Underwater Archaeology Park.

The park is home to the sunken city of Baia; an ancient Roman city that was completely submerged by bradyseism activity, a phenomenon typical of the volcanic area of the ‘Phlegraean fields’ in which the city was built.

The underwater engulfment left the city virtually untouched, transforming it a great testament to the wonders of the Roman era in the Neapolitan region.
